Magic Italy

Here it is..
A comment about the ridicolous situation of design (as a professional work) in Italy.

CARLO RATTI'S SENSEABLE CITY

I'm gonna follow the speech/presentation of Carlo Ratti in the School of Doctarate of Politecnico di Milano Seminars.
I'm very curious of hearing this smart italian guy that has become a thinking guru on the other side of the ocean

Sometimes you face human stupidity...
What about putting a seasonal vending machine in an open 365/365 days university facility?

SERVICE DESIGN RESEARCH

A new initiative on Service Design in which I'm involved in...together with Daniela Sangiorgi (ImaginationLancaster) _ Anna Meroni (Politecnico di Milano) _ Nicola Morelli (Aalborg University)

A new website on Service Design Research has been launched.
With this initiative we aim to consolidate existing knowledge and to support the growth of a research community that engages in meaningful research relevant to the challenges service design is dealing with today and in the future.

Hope you will join us and participate to build this up: www.servicedesignresearch.com

A DAY IN A LIFE OF A FACULTY

Can a entity reform itself? Can an organisation be changed by a top down process? Can innovation emerge from discussion?

The answer is..blowing in the wind..as our great Bob told a long time ago...

DESIGN OPENSOURCE

I receive and publish from my friend Francesca 'Franz' Valsecchi this very interesting program about DESIGN OPENSOURCE festival

DESIGN OPENSOURCE
hardware - prototypes – graphics

Connecting the dots

A contribution to define the user experience in the connected word...coming from a collegue of mine

quoting...

"...Gianluca Brugnoli
Connecting the Dots of User Experience

The article presents a point of view about analyzing and designing the user experience within pervasive networks made of distributed services and applications, where the user is the primary actor who freely and opportunistically connects and activates the system components following an activity-driven process. A digital content case study is used to outline the main characteristics of this scenario and to introduce a tool for user experience modelling and designing. From the application of this model are proposed some considerations about how the design process could change to support this vision..."

A Critical Artefact Methodology: Using Provocative Conceptual Designs to Foster Human-centred Innovation

Quoting from Chris Rust Blog

"...Simon's work explores some practical implications of the critical design methods developed by Dunn and Raby, Bill Gaver and others. He has synthesised and evaluated ways for designers to use provocative concepts, "Crazy Ideas" as he describes them, to stimulate stakeholders to engage in productive speculation about aspirations and needs that might not be revealed by more conventional user research techniques. In particular he positions the designer at the centre of his methods, tacitly "processing" the insights from stakeholder workshops into new, more relevant design concepts to stimulate further rounds of stakeholder thinking, rather than relying on explicit analysis.
To support this Simon has developed a des cription of such processing based on Michael Polanyi's theories of tacit knowledge in action. I find this a most useful building block in the body of work being done here at Sheffield Hallam by myself and Nicola Wood with more to come from Rizal Rahman and Cigdem Kaya whose PhD studies are extending it in different directions. You can find this description on pages 171-173 of the thesis: 6.2.4 Designing as ‘processing’ and Polanyi’s indwelling..."
